To be allowed to own slaves you had to be born in the Dix and you had to be old blood. Only two handful families were old blood: all living in the south providing cheap food, clothing and coal for the rest of the states.
The most successful lie was, that the economy would break down if the slave system would end. And the most successful hidden truth was that it was common to enslave free citizens for crimes against the system. So, working for the slavery resistance or short Res always brought the danger to end up as a slave too.
Jensen is Old blood and moved to New York to escape this tradition.

Jared is finally the head of a dig, and his jealous and petty ex is his second in command. Investigating catacombs in a remote village in Finland brings Jared face to face with something ancient, something awe-inspiring, and something infinitely dangerous. Jared helps name him Jensen, and he becomes a bigger problem than the ex could ever hope to be.

Summary
