Summary
Max broke the quiet first, his voice softer than usual. “You’re always taking care of me, Charles. Even after all this time.” He glanced over at Charles, his blue eyes holding something unspoken.
Charles chuckled, trying to play it off. “I’ve been doing it since we were kids. Can’t stop now. You’d be a mess without me.”
Max smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Yeah, I would.”
There was something about the way Max said it—something that tugged at Charles, making his chest ache. He looked down at his plate, pushing the food around with his fork. “You take care of me, too, you know. It’s not just one-sided.”
Max’s laugh was quiet, almost self-deprecating. “I’m not sure buying you dance shoes and clothes counts.”
