“Okay, you can’t do it, so don’t.”

“Don’t ask my brother out on a date. I mean, Sam’s literally Captain America, so it’s not like he’s hurting for admirers,” she said, laughing lightly. “If you can’t bring yourself to ask him out, then just… don’t.” She shrugged again. “Sam will be fine, trust me.”

It took everything in Sam to keep a straight face and not let his expression mirror her perplexed look. Because, what was going on? What was this? Sure, when Bucky and he had first separated, they’d had to sit down with Aisha and have this conversation together, and then he’d had to have smaller, more simple, versions of the same conversation without Bucky, on more than one occasion. But they were all a long time ago, at least they were all a relatively long time ago. As far as visitation and custody were concerned, things had been pretty settled for a while now. So where was this coming from?
Or: Sam is just trying to do right by his family and his boyfriend.

Not that Bucky’s attention had ever really left Sam. The mere thought was laughable. Honestly, it was laughable that anyone that knew them would ever think that, especially Sam. But maybe Sam needed a reminder — of Bucky’s complete and unwavering devotion? Of his complete lack of chill when it came to Sam? Of the fact that he’d never really and truly leave Sam alone?
And maybe Sam’s birthday was the perfect time for such a reminder.
