Summary
The confusion that hits her upon seeing Ymir’s lean body crouching at her window is unparalleled in intensity to any emotion Historia’s ever felt before. She blinks once, twice, thrice, simply staring, rooted to her spot by her bed as she tries to process the image that stands before her. Ymir blinks back, a self-conscious smile blossoming timidly on her lips. It almost compliments the bruise turning dark on her forehead, and Historia decides that if Ymir is genuinely real and was hurt by one of her guards—well, somebody’ll be getting fired tomorrow.
But she’ll deal with that after…whatever the fuck’s happening right now.
“They, uh, they said you were resting in your room and kindly rerouted me outside.” She pauses, giving an unabashed once-over to Historia in her nightgown. Ymir grins with wolf teeth and even though she looks ridiculous, Historia wants to kiss her senseless.
“I must be going insane,” she says instead, and then promptly pushes the apparition out of the window.
What she doesn't expect is for her hand to connect to warm, real flesh, and for Ymir to really fall, toppling into the rose bushes below.

this fic is a glorious in-character reminder of loki's true greatness. no bashing, no gary stu elements, no excuses, no contrivances. all the characters - and i do mean ALL of them - feel so real, so believable, so purposeful. beautifully written, and very, very thoughtful.
chapter 25 evoked such a violent storm of sorrow, but also a small bit of relief. i haven't cried this hard over a fanwork in a while. i will be revisiting this fic and thinking about it for many years to come.
