Summary
Sooyoung does not celebrate her birthday.
Simply speaking it’s because there is no one to celebrate it with. Her parents deliver gifts and the housekeeper greets her, but that hardly counts. On her thirteenth birthday, she sneaks out of the house through the kitchen window and gets herself what the employee at the bakery calls a ‘birthday cupcake,’ probably for those who can’t afford an entire cake.
On her thirteenth birthday, Sooyoung makes a wish. She blows the candle out and has her first taste of lemon-flavored cupcake.

“Heewon-ssi.” Yoo Sangah smiles, as sweetly as she possibly can. This seems to do nothing to make Jung Heewon look any less wary. “Are you free today? Want to get coffee with me?”
“I, uh,” Jung Heewon laughs nervously, taking a step back, “actually, uh, I don’t… like coffee that much.”
Yoo Sangah takes a deep breath, making sure her smile is still in place and doing her best not to think of all the times she’s seen Jung Heewon drinking coffee in the mornings. She hadn’t been raised a quitter. “That’s alright! Would you rather we go to a bar instead, then?”
Jung Heewon, a literal bartender, laughs again. “I, uh. I don’t know what that is.”
Yoo Sangah feels her smile begin to strain.
