She closes the door, and the cat meows at her again, and another laugh bubbles out of her. “Okay, cat,” she says. She opens a can and sets it on the ground. “There you go. Bon appetit.”
It happily chows down, and Max sits on the ground, regarding it. “Well, you need a name, I suppose.”
Should she name it Chloe? Wait, no, God, that’s so weird. No, she’s not naming this cat after her dead friend/friend-that-she-made-out-with-one-time-so-maybe-they-could’ve-been-more-if-she-wasn’t-murdered. Should she name it…she thinks of her diary, the pages and pages full of sketches of the blue butterfly, that butterfly that she hates and loves at the same time, the one she saw on Chloe’s coffin. That’s a…morpho butterfly, right?
In grieving for Chloe, Max gets a cat.

Summary
Rachel expects to feel some sort of jealousy, the type she usually does when Max and Chloe are together. But there’s none of it. Ever since she’s started to become friends with Max, it’s faded, gradually dissolving with each tea session they share.
“Uh,” Max whispers. “Good morning?”
“I wanted to take Chloe to the Two Whales,” Rachel whispers back. “Wanna come with?”

Ash is trying to turn this into a Parenting Moment™ that he thinks Professor Burnet would be proud of. He ignores the withering look Pikachu sends his way. I’m not a child, he knows Pikachu’s trying to say. Ash looks back at him. I know, he’s saying. Go along with it for the toddler.
But it doesn’t quite pan out, because all Lei says is, “Pikachu’s favorite food is ketchup? That’s gross.”

“But what are you drawing? I feel like every time I get a peek it’s the same thing.”
Max thinks, guiltily, about the pages and pages of her journal that are filled with the exact same drawing, sketched in harsh red and black lines. The needles, the duct tape. The camera. The binders and binders and more binders, names and names and names. She can remember every single name on those binders, and she writes them in the drawings. Kayla, Brittany, Alexis. Megan, Ashley, Carol-Ann. Deanna. Tyra, Beverly, Lula. Suzie, Lynn, Kellie.
Rachel.
Kate.
Victoria.
Max.
Every time she draws it, the image gets a little clearer. Not that Max wants it to. But she can’t control it, at this point. She’s been drawing a picture nearly every day for the past month, like she’s a puppet and there’s something else pulling the strings, picking up the red and black pens, opening the journal.
“It’s nothing,” Max lies.
