    “Are you going to eat me?” Eddie asked, finally, without meaning. He covered his mouth with his hands and gulped again, taking a trembling step back. Steve watched on and laughed.

     

    “I will not eat you, Eddie,” he said, mirthfully. His smile was handsome too, a little crooked, still sharp. “I could, I could kill you in a second if I wanted to. But…”

     

    “But?” Eddie couldn’t help but ask, and he wondered not for the first time if this would be the time his curiosity killed him. Wayne did always say he was like a cat in more ways than one – he somehow always landed on his feet and he was terminally curious.

     

    Steve grinned, “you are interesting. There is something, I don’t know, I cannot quite put my finger on it, but you are interesting.”

     

    or, Eddie, newly sober and fresh from his last stint in rehab, has an encounter that will change his life forever.
