“Right, yeah. Sorry.” The bartender stutters. “I didn’t mean—”
“S’fine,” Mickey says. The word feels ironic, almost. Nothing about any of this is fine. He’s so fucking far from fine, the word doesn’t even feel real coming off his tongue.
The bartender is—whatever. Mickey doesn’t give a shit about this hipster wannabe trying to be politically correct. It’s the rest of it that does him in. The weight of it all on his shoulders, the blood on his hands.
“Shit’s dark sometimes,” Mickey says quietly, his voice almost unrecognizable even to himself.
He stares at the wood grain on the bar, and he keeps going, because he wants—no, he needs someone else to understand this. Or at least try to.

Summary
That stupid plastic bag holds its shape like it’s frozen in time, like it’s meant to rest there over his father’s dead body forever, and Mickey can’t stand it. Something about the way the plastic reflects the light, the way it’s stretched over Terry’s unmoving face, pressed against his already blue lips.
“Get it off him,” Mickey mutters, taking a step towards his father. “Get that fucking thing off his head—”
“Mickey,” Ian says, grabbing his arm. “We can’t.”
“Get it off!” Mickey yells as the first tear falls, ripping his arm out of Ian’s grasp.
Mickey’s fast but his husband is faster—thinking clearer, probably, even though they’re both still in shock. Ian gets two arms around Mickey’s waist and hauls him backwards before Mickey can come within arm’s reach of the body.

“Are you okay?” he asks for the third time that day, but he already knows the answer before the words even leave his mouth.
Ian looks up at him, slowly, with big, sad eyes and a frustrated line between his brows. He swallows, and it looks like that alone takes the life out of him.
“No,” he answers quietly, staring straight at Mickey’s shoulder.
He doesn’t elaborate. He doesn’t need to; Mickey understands.
