I love birthdays, Klaus confessed.She tried to imagine him in a party hat. Candles flickering before he snuffed them out. Huff, puff, big bad wolf, blah blah blah. But now she was thinking about him blowing out candles. Thinking about his mouth. Pink frosting on his lip. All she could conjure was ripped open ribcages, blood unfurling like ribbons. That was probably his idea of a good birthday party.
He was still speaking to her. His voice vibrated around her head, angry bees attacking her. His voice dripped into her like honey.

He hadn’t heard her sneak up behind him.
“Ahem. You’re welcome,” John wasn’t sure whether to get up or not. He didn’t have his hat on, anyway. She sat beside him, lifting her skirt to join him on the worn down planks. John had thought about Abigail lifting her skirt too many damn times. He was surprised when she plucked the cigarette from him, her finger catching on his bottom lip. He pulled away, fighting the desire to suck it into his mouth.
“You could have stayed earlier, you know,” Abigail looked at him like she knew what he was thinking.
“Thought you wanted ten minutes peace.”
“I coulda had you and still had five minutes peace,” she flicked her gaze up and down him. The mean strike of her comment got his blood up.
