    Summary

During the Mount Dafan hunt, in the year of the 438th Cultivation Competition, Lan Wangji sees a new-old competitor.

"Have we met?" asks Lan Wangji.

"I'd hope you would remember me if we'd met." The other cultivator looks at him with a bland kind of smile that Lan Wangji has never seen from Wei Ying. Wei Ying could not be bland at anything. And that's not his voice. And yet, it is. It's deeper, like there is grit dusted in, but the inflection, the light hang of humour, that's Wei Ying's.

Lan Wangji blinks. It feels like he's having a hallucination; if he squints, he can see Wei Ying superimposed on this young man and then he blinks again, and he is gone. There's a pressure in his chest, as if someone just inflated a balloon inside of him and plastered all of his organs to the underside of his ribs.

“Caitlin's moving to Paris,” Dex says. “Chris isn't,” he adds, even though that much is implied.

Nursey whistles through his teeth. “Fuck.”

Or, in which despite grand romantic gestures and relationship therapy on rooftops, there is always a room in Dex’s apartment for Nursey to return to.

How Hazel Callahan met the loudest, meanest, most annoying girl on the elementary school playground, fell in love, and grew up.
    -
In Hazel’s dreams, there was a girl with curly hair who kind of glowed. She leaned over Hazel, caging her in. She had a biting, sneering mouth and these bruising fingers. She was awful and really, really warm.

Hazel woke up at three in the morning, foggy, and thought, oh. Okay.

Being seventeen sucked. It sucked even more when you'd spent the last nine years falling in love with your best friend.

“I can’t believe you like me,” Enid said, almost falling asleep.

Wednesday’s breathing was soft and even. For a moment, Enid wasn’t sure she was still awake.
    Then, “Who else is there?”

    Summary

Wednesday is tormented by glimpses of parallel universes in which she is sickeningly in love with her roommate. (Which she isn't, of course.)
    -
Wednesday refused to look at Enid. She wasn’t sure what would happen to her if she did — whether she was so raw and vulnerable right now, magic still thrumming through her system like a heartbeat, that she would launch into another vision, or if she would blurt something humiliating, like: “I actually like kissing you in my head, and have been doing so with increasing frequency.”
