uno santa has not changed since you last left him, and when he turns around first you see the silent silhouette of grey ash in his palms. second is the cut, marbled narrow of his eyes.
"it's you," he says, mouth splitting open in the shape of a grin. "come!"

“I wanted the world,” Santa chews on his lip, eyes trained on the cotton folds of Rikimaru’s shirt. “I wanted the world to look at us. Together.”
“Me too,” Rikimaru says.
Santa laughs, hollow. It’s unbecoming of him, and Rikimaru feels like the bottom of his stomach is sinking even further.
“I wanted,” Santa continues, pulling Rikimaru a little closer by the shirt. “I wanted them to see you. The way I see you.”

“How sly adults are,” Santa falls along the line of gravity, a hand gently pushing Rikimaru’s shoulder into the sheets. His knees find their way onto the bed, and in a moment he’s squarely pinning Rikimaru down. “Or should I say, how burdensome it is to be an adult.”

And then Shion is next to him, and they grab onto each other to get to their feet. The flashlight is somewhere below them, giving the water an eerie glow. As Shion leans down to grab it, Nezumi keeps a hold on his arm, and says, “This place isn’t that important. You don’t need to try so hard.”
Shion doesn’t shrug Nezumi off this time, just looks up and gives him a resolute glare. “Don’t say things like that,” he snaps, “of course it’s important, it was your home.”

I'm screaming - everything about this is cinematic and beautifully written, the skillful mastery of distance between narrator and reader reflects rikimaru's character really well. God, everything falls into place perfectly, just HOW?!
