    Summary

It starts like this: Essek, in a fit of lonely idiocy, agrees to partake in a honeypot scheme with the Mighty Nein. It goes about as smoothly as he should have expected.

It evolves to this: by decree of Deirta Thelyss, Verin is tasked with protecting his brother and his brother’s friends(??) as they parlay with the Children of Malice over the diplomatic incident they caused. Verin remembers his brother being much more of an aloof douche and much less of a floating disaster.

Or: In a reality where the Mighty Nein do a stop in Xhorhas prior to meeting up with DeRogna, Essek agrees to help with one side quest and ends up with a lover, a brother, and a fight with a god.

    Summary

Humming in interest, Caleb sucks, slowly. Oh, it’s nice. It’s very nice. The suction is replaced by the smooth edges of teeth, distinctly felt as they drag over the flesh. There is the slide of wet lips and then the clink of teeth on metal. Ever so lightly, Caleb tugs at the star pendant that dangles from the softest part of his lobe.

Hahhh—” Essek gapes, staring up at the wooden ceiling as he feels gravity flip deep within his belly. He blinks and wets his lips before he can speak again. “Light above. What are you doing to me?

    or,

Five times Essek woke up with level(s) of exhaustion and one time he didn't.

    Summary

Essek is shaking once he’s sat there for twenty minutes. He’s thirsty. He wants to walk over to the jug of cold water on the table by the door. He needs to get up. He can’t.
He won't cry. It’s stupid to cry over this.
    Verin gurgles.
“I hate you.” Essek curls his fingers around his elbows. “I hate you. I hate you.”

For as long as Essek can remember, he has been cursed to obey. He has managed, in his own way, to mitigate the consequences of the curse while pursuing his academic and personal desires. It is only after being commanded to act as a guide for the Mighty Nein that it becomes a true complication.

    Summary

The first letter Essek receives from Caleb Widogast is secreted into his pocket at some point during a tense interview with the Bright Queen. For the life of him, Essek cannot figure out how it was done. He doesn’t recall so much as brushing against the other man as he escorted the Mighty Nein out of the Lucid Bastion.

Yet when he returns to his office, there it is, tucked into a nearly invisible pocket in his mantle — a piece of subpar parchment folded to vaguely resemble a cat’s face with tiny pointed ears.
