The day the Akasha terminal at Kaveh’s ear began glitching red, he was returning from a job at the desert. Sudden, sharp pain lanced through him, and he bit back a scream, falling down and scraping his cheek against the hot sands.
Kaveh didn’t understand why the entirety of Sumeru hunted him like he was a criminal with the highest bounty in the land. Running all over Sumeru had robbed him of rest, and he could only hope fleeing the country could finally give him the reprieve he wanted.

Summary
Alhaitham offers his arm, and they continue their nightly stroll through the city. As they walk, Kaveh thumbs his soulmark absentmindedly.
In primary school, his classmates used to fawn over it, pleading to get up-close looks. He didn’t begrudge them their curiosity over the strange shape and rare color, but he only let them touch it when he was in an extraordinarily good mood, when their shrieks of surprise were amusing rather than overwhelming. These days, only Kaveh ever touches it.
“I used to think we’d have matching ones,” Alhaitham says, twisting his arm as if to confirm it’s still there. He’s not sure what drove him to say that—they haven’t ever talked about it at length—but he feels bold tonight.
Soulmates share matching marks, a gift given by the gods to those who are chosen for one another, but Alhaitham doesn’t believe in them, and Kaveh doesn’t have one.

He doesn’t have to say it out loud. His portfolio speaks for itself. They aren’t going to make the Light of Kshahrewar jump through hoops for his own office the way they do for fresh-faced all-but-dissertation 20-somethings.
“That’s excellent. Congratulations. You’re going to be exactly what Kshahrewar needs right now.”
Kaveh doesn’t accept the praise. “There’s a woman in Spantamad who’s starting her sabbatical soon,” he says instead of thank you.
This, too, you already knew. You stamped Zinat’s leave form; she told you she was going to Inazuma to study some kind of dangerous contamination on one of the islands. But what does Kaveh have to do with her?
“I’ve arranged to rent from her.”
Now this—this takes you by surprise. “Oh” is all you manage to say.
If you love him, let him go. If he comes back to you, he’ll be yours forever.
