    Summary

Aloy finds it hard to say exactly what it began. She’d blamed it on unripe berries, the first time Kotallo shot her a wry smile across the war table, his face lit pale blue from the holographic interface, and she felt an unfamiliar twisting in her gut. She wouldn’t make the connection for weeks. But then, Rost had never given her any kind of talk, except to tell her once, stiffly, that if she started to bleed between her legs, not to be concerned unless it lasted more than a week. This had been on her eleventh birthday, delivered with a stack of bandages. He had never told her that a person’s smile might one day make her stomach churn.

"It wasn’t so long ago that she had scorned Avad for making his feelings known with so much danger ahead and so much still to do. She had asked herself, scornful, how he could even think of such a thing at a time like this. And all the while the same indignity had been lying in wait for her. It was mortifying to think that she had always had this potential inside of her - that it had simply been biding its time for the worst possible moment to rear its terrible head."

came for the incredible summary, stayed for the spooky cauldron, the slow build of tension, the banter, the - OK, just all of it.

    Summary

“Your messenger that intercepted us yesterday could've been spared the errand to track us down.”

The Chief’s relaxed mood drops instantly. Aloy’s next words stick in her mouth as the sharp shift in energy turns her blood to ice.

“I sent no runners for Kotallo. Is he not with your squad?”

Her hand is already fumbling at her ear, fervently stacking hope against the dread building in her gut.

"Champion," Hekarro rises, gaze hardening. "Where is my Marshal?"

Kotallo wakes in a dangerous place, but he isn't alone. Aloy and Hekarro race to recover their boy.

Little arrow, Rost would say when she voiced her frustrations with the tribe too loudly or too often, who never looks where she's pointed before she's loosed. One day you will look for the bow that drew you back, and I hope you remember us more fondly then, no matter your quarrel with us now.
