    At first Ren thought the prisoner was bleeding; then, that his limbs had been bound with some kind of bright red rope. It wasn’t until the man stirred that Ren realised—the tendrils at his wrists and ankles were attached to him. Growing out of him, like vines, or—

    “Coral,” said Scar. “He’s full of it. Not sure if he’s got any organs left or if it’s all just sea sponge in there. I’d poke him to find out, but I do so like being alive.” He rattled the bars of the cell. “Hey, you there! Stand up so the king can look at you.”

    In a sudden uncoiling of limbs, the prisoner rose and came across the cell towards them, bringing his face right up to the bars. “You’re not my king.”

    Ren, King of the Hermits, First of his Name, waits patiently to be dethroned. But on the fringes of his kingdom, the dead are rising to fight each other, and a red-handed survivor emerges with a coral parasite sharing his body and a hatred for all kings.

    (A crossover tale of Ren the King and Limited Life Martyn, ft. coral abominations, court intrigue, a prison that will definitely not burn down at any point, and a lot of cats.)

    “Unhand me,” Ren replies. The creature behind him laughs.
