Summary
You had met Daniel Cain through work, of course; being assigned as a courier for Miskatonic was a strike of luck – and whether it was good or bad was up to the beholder. After you had been stuck with him in the morgue trying to find a stack of papers that had been misdelivered, he was kind enough to help you dig them up, and then walk you to where they actually needed to be. It was somewhere in that little adventure where he mentioned he was looking for a roommate, dismissive of his own offer to hide genuine hope in his eyes.
You had pushed it off and admitted you would see how things worked out on your end before telling him yes. Neither of you had been kidding anyone, though. A week later you were on his porch and asking if there was still room for one more. He had been nothing but open arms, but it was maybe two days later that you realized he wasn’t going to be your only companion in his house.
The fact it had taken two days was a story within itself.

Summary
There was something rather acrid about visiting the house your parents had owned for most of your life as an adult. Maybe it was just because the prospect of having your own was slipping further away from your reach along with the state of the world, or maybe it was just because the older they got the more they decorated in a way that made you feel as though you were wearing an itchy sweater whenever you were here.
It was almost like a malignant part of your memory that walked alongside you in most things, never really being seen until you were staring it in the face like this. Either way, it was something so unmistakably home – and then becoming something far different than that.
Maybe the real putrid truth of it was that time was passing, and between you, your parents, and the house, it was something you were unable to really swallow.

It wasn’t close to dawn, not even touching the spaces between the trees when you stirred. Luckily, the two of them had been tangled in each other, the covers and embracing all to themselves. You didn’t mind with recollections on how they would talk about one another behind closed doors – only when the other couldn’t hear, though. In a fucked up way, they did love each other. Couldn’t live without him, as Darla may say when she knew he was out of earshot.
