Etho considered himself on a timer.
He had never considered what would happen if that timer ran out.
“Come on!” Etho shook his head, barely moving due to the grip Bdubs had on his face to get him to focus. “Etho, hey. What’s going on?”
His mouth moved without it telling it to, then closed like whoever was possessing him didn’t know what to say either. There was something going on, something Etho could feel but didn’t understand. They were standing on the edge of the world, and Etho didn’t know how to tell Bdubs he was out of time. Was he out of time? Maybe he was just going insane again. Maybe-
“Etho, there’s a lot of void energy going on right now, can you focus-”
You can’t outsmart a god. You can only run.

Summary
Etho loved his friends. It was just…Etho loved his friends in small doses. Not when all twelve of them were arguing whether or not Martyn was in the wrong or right.
“Why are you complaining anyway, Grian?” Cleo’s voice was mostly amused as they leaned against the table. “You got Scar to pick them off for you.”
The room seemed to settle to a low buzz as everyone looked in Grian’s direction. “Well, I-” Grian had pink cheeks, only growing darker. Etho struggled not to groan as Scar slipped his arms around his boyfriend’s waist and rested his head on top of his. “It’s the concept of it all. What about the people who don’t have a person to eat their olives?” Grian huffed, struggling a bit before letting Scar pull him closer.

It had to be a joke.
Etho must have frozen, since Joel’s smile slipped into something panicked. “I was just joking-”
“We wouldn’t be able to show my face.”
The words slipped out of Etho’s mouth before he could stop himself, surprise falling on both of their faces. Etho tried to backtrack. “I mean, if you weren’t joking. Obviously you were joking but-”
“Hey, Etho.” Joel’s smile had turned slightly amused, if not curious, like he hadn’t considered Etho an actual possibility until just then. “I was joking, but that doesn’t mean we can’t- I mean,” His smile took an almost embarrassed turn. “It would help out. If you’re willing.”
This couldn’t be happening. This was crazy, this was the worst possible thing Etho could do in his circumstance. “It’s not a big deal.” It was like Etho’s mouth was completely separated from the rest of him.
“It’s not a big deal? What, having sex with me?”
“Yeah.” Etho was lying through his teeth. “I mean, so many other people have done it, it can't be that special.”
Joel's a camboy, Etho's a virgin. It's all very casual.

Summary
Today wasn’t ever going to be a happy day, not for Etho.
However, Etho thought he would at least have some excitement for the event. After all, being royalty but being a younger sibling didn’t mean much for him other than political chess and a loveless marriage for good trades and relations for neighboring kingdoms. But maybe he would’ve gotten to know his partner, maybe he would be friends with them.
A take-over by barbarians however, was never really on his radar.
Etho and Ren get married. Neither of them are thrilled about it.

Etho froze, eyes that were previously drooping with welcomed sleep suddenly wide and overly alert. He reminded Joel of a deer, frozen in the middle of the road while Joel was a car barreling eighty miles an hour in his direction.
“Is this a hypothetical question, or?”
“It can be hypothetical. If that makes it better.”
In Joel's mind, confessing is a lot like a car accident.
