As if viewing someone else, he watches as his hands reach out, grabbing the cowl off the mannequin, and he watches as he holds it up, his eyes starting to burn as he looks over the rough leather and the neat stitches and the places where stains have come out, and…
And the cowl shouldn’t fit him.
But it will.

"No." He frowns. "What is their purpose?"
"They're for kids that're scared of the dark sometimes. I dunno. Or just for decoration. They're cool, y'know? They light up in the dark, kids find shit like that entertaining." He shrugs. "I always wanted some, but Mom could never afford to buy them."

Summary
He wasn’t even there, and Damian wasn’t sure why he was surprised. Even when he’d hesitantly extended the invitation, he’d known better than to count it as a sure thing. It wasn’t like the nature of his father’s job didn’t result in it’s fair share of unpredictable emergencies. It was just that if one had come up, he would likely have been called in to assist as Robin. So when Bruce didn’t show, he’d waited eagerly for the alert, already planning his excuses.
The makeshift gallery was nearly empty of families now, and Damian was fiercely avoiding coming to terms with the fact that his father had just decided not to come.
