The kid is there again. Or no, "kid" isn"t the right word — he looks to be in his mid-twenties, if Kabir is to hazard a guess. But that is young, frighteningly so, considering the bitter and jaded look in his eyes. It"s hollow, utterly devoid of hope in a way that makes what would otherwise be an attractive face appear cold and hard.
To most people it would probably sound silly to read so much into someone"s eyes, but the thing is, Kabir recognizes that look. He knows it well, since he"d seen it staring back at him from the mirror often enough. He"d felt just as lost as that kid seems to be for a long time after Abdul Rahmani had ended his military career.

A group of cadets were all ganging up on one, currently crouching on the floor and trying to block the kicks and punches. The assailants were all dressed, while their target was naked. He"d probably been taking a shower when he got jumped, but Kabir noted with some satisfaction that he must"ve gotten a few hits in before being taken down — a couple of the group stood to the side, nursing bloody noses or tightly gripping their ribs.
