“Quiet.” Levi looks down, and then up through the curtain of black hair falling over his pale forehead. “Don’t make me laugh or people will see.”
“A reputation to maintain,” Erwin says, watching Levi fluster. He has the upper hand, a little. A few years older, and drunk enough to tease, he likes the way Levi fidgets now when he’s uncomfortable. “Would you like to dance with a prince?”
“No.” Levi frowns at him. “Princes are kings that haven’t yet learned to wipe their own assholes. Why would I want to dance with one?”

“Do you want to?” Erwin reaches across the table and takes his hand, squeezing it lightly.
Levi thinks of his little house on the square, and the blossom in the park, he thinks about sharing ice cream with the kids on the sea front, drinking tea with Onyankopon in the afternoon. He thinks of the way Erwin’s eyes light up when he smiles, and all the wonders those eyes never had a chance to see.
“Yes,” Levi says slowly, “I think I do. Just for a little while longer.”Levi makes a promise to live his life after the war.
