    Summary

Being a historian that can see ghosts is not always the advantage you might think; they always know more than you do, they are impossible to cite as sources and no one tells you at 18, when you’re picking your degree, that if you get hit by a car in your thirties you might wake up in hospital with history staring back at you.

It’s degrading. Every part of it is degrading. And Thomas loves it so much that he feels he ought to be damned for it, if only he hadn’t faced the afterlife already and found it quite lacking.

    Summary

Dying is, of course, incredibly tragic. It is also the most wonderful opportunity.

    Alternately:

[“Oh, there’s no point.” Said Pat bitterly, “Julian already told me about Italia ’90. He’s ruined that as well.”

Alison took a breath. “Pat,” She said gently, “It’s a compilation of an entire decade. Even Julian can’t spoil a whole decade.”

“Oh yes I can! Party conference, ’88, Anne Widdecombe told me I’d ruined her whole month but I’d barely gotten the engine running, only asked -in the spirit of charity- if she fancied popping round the back by which I mean-”

And finally she could hold it no longer. In a glorious moment completely devoid of thought Alison reached out and fulfilled the desire of her last fifty years on earth.

She cuffed Julian upside the back of the head.]
