Summary
After losing his wife and struggling to raise Christopher alone in LA, Eddie's parents do the one thing that they've been threatening to do for years. Take his son away from him, leaving Eddie angry, distrustful, and a shell of who he used to be.
After leaving the Seals, Buck meets someone who will change his life for the better, and someone who will change his life for the worse, leaving him desperate for escape.

Eddie Diaz, the reigning World Champion and the man who holds so many records in the sport it’s difficult to count them on both hands. Last year, he won nineteen of the 21 races, sweeping the competition and was crowned a three-time World Champion before they raced at his home circuit in Texas. “I should’ve purposefully lost,” Buck remembers Diaz saying to Jenson Button in Qatar, “Being crowned Champion in Texas would’ve been so special.”
Buck’s barely spoken to the guy, and he hates him.

Summary
Missing Chris is less of an emotion these days and more of a physical entity. He’s sure everyone can see that he’s slowly hollowing himself out, that he can’t do much of anything else.
But when Jee laughs at him trying to get his tongue to touch his nose, and Mara loops one of her arms through his to keep him from tossing the rest of his cup in the garbage, Eddie feels solid again.
Maybe he likes yellow birthday cake ice cream after all.
(or, gerrard messes with the team's schedules and eddie 'i just drove my son to flee the state' diaz is the only option to watch mara and jee-yun after school on tuesdays, which, shouldn't be a problem at all, right?)

Christopher peered at him, his eyes bigger through his lenses. “Why?”
Buck nearly choked. “Why? Why… what? I mean, I’m bisexual, if that’s what you’re—”
“Oh, no.” Christopher shook his head, “I just meant, if you’re dating men, why aren’t you dating Dad?” Which simply did not help Buck’s choking problem.
Buck really, truly had never pictured Eddie’s son asking him these questions, specifically why he wasn’t dating Eddie.
“Uh— your Dad isn’t— we’re not—”
“Oh.” A pause.
“I don’t want you to date Dad.”
