Summary
Chihaya didn't notice when her legs lengthened by a few centimeters. She hadn't taken note when the scrapes on her knees smoothed out or the first time her hair was long enough to brush against her shoulders. If all happened so minutely, so gradually, so steadily, that she simply hadn't conceptualized the changes taking place.
Chihaya didn't notice her growth while it was happening; only later, when it was done–and she had to readjust her karuta form, her technique, to compensate–did she fully realize that it had happened at all.
Falling in love with Arata was a lot like that.

She’s only ever seen him smile so wide in the presence of a hard-earned karuta trophy, half-tackled on the tatami by his teammates. His hand shifts to cup her cheek, his thumb stroking gently over the damp skin under her eye. She leans into his warmth, his softness.
“Can I kiss you?” she asks.
“Yes.” He says it so quietly she almost can’t hear him, but he knows what she’s capable of discerning.

Summary
On the screen in front of them, two women in formal dress lean over tatami, poised with coiled kinetic energy over a set of cards splayed out nearly between them.
Behind the two players, a reader belts the opening lines to the next poem and they both lurch forward, but manage to stop their momentum before they careen ahead. The card must not be in the playing field then.
The chyron beneath the two women declares that the darker-haired player is the reigning Queen, the top female player, Wakamiya Shinobu. The other woman, her light hair pulled back into a ponytail, is the challenger, Chihaya Ayase.
“It’s karuta,” Akito says, the image of green cards swirling in her head. She’d bought them once in a fit of boredom, intent on unearthing a new hobby, but she’d given up shortly after she memorized the hundred poems since no one in the estate would be bothered to play with her.

Akito and Tohru catch the tail end of the Queen match and decide to give karuta a try.

Summary
Growing up, the only camping that Taichi’s mother allowed seemed only loosely related to the word. She preferred hotel rooms and cabins in scenic locations, not the grit and grime of the outdoors. Taichi had never built a fire or put up a tent or struggled with a tarp when the weather turned sour. He’s afraid he won’t be good at it. His hiking boots are almost new, though he’s been wearing them around campus for a few weeks now since he read that new boots can be more hindrance than help if they’re not broken in.
Still, he’s glad. He’s glad to be meeting Suo in Nagasaki and not dragging him there, though it would have been nice to have the company even for the short trip. He’s glad Suo asked.
