Summary
Dr. Ed Teach should have everything he wants. He’s a highly acclaimed researcher with a stellar reputation, several of his lab’s papers have been published in Nature, and he’s making a ton of money.
But he isn’t happy at all, he’s bored out of his fucking skull.
Dr. Stede Bonnet is eager, enthusiastic, and passionate, but struggles constantly to get funding for his projects. Devoting his life to studying a species of mice that live atop mountains may have been a grave mistake.
But a chance meeting at a zoology conference may be enough to both help Ed rediscover his passions and help Stede more successfully break into the world of academic research. And just maybe, they’ll discover something else too.Modern AU with Scientists Ed and Stede (cross-posted from Twitter)

Summary
“Well, the children are a bit young, so they’re addressed to Mary, mostly.”
He watches Ed go pale, and immediately regrets his words. “Your wife?”
“Indeed,” Stede agrees. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. “B—but, er, not in the way you think.”
How can he explain to Ed that the contents of these letters are quite certainly the opposite of what he thinks?
Suddenly, the way the paper glints in the sunlight gives Stede an idea. A way to talk things through.
“Let me read them to you.”
Or; Ed learns just how much Stede truly loves him, in a rather indirect fashion

Summary
Her earlier intuition was correct, Blackbeard thinks she killed Stede. She wanted to bring Ed here, but she didn’t mean to do this.
“Ed, wait,” Mary pleads, “listen—”
Blackbeard’s gaze burns into her, searing hot and furious, but he says nothing, seemingly giving her permission to speak. She steels her nerves. “Stede’s not dead,” she finally forces out.
The fire in his eyes dims just a bit and Blackbeard’s breath catches. A flame needs oxygen to burn and Mary’s admission seems to have stolen the very air from Blackbeard’s lungs. “What?” he finally asks.
“Stede’s not dead,” she repeats. Mary wrings her hands together. “He faked it.”
or; tired of receiving letter after letter of Stede pining for Ed, Mary decides to take matters into her own hands.

Summary
“You need to get yourself out there, Captain,” Lucius says. “Meet new people, try new things, then you won’t ever think about Blackbeard again.”
Getting himself out there and meeting new people doesn’t seem like a bad idea at all, not with the few modifications he has in mind. His scribe might just be on to something.
“Lucius,” Stede says, snapping his fingers. “That’s genius!”
Lucius smirks. “Well, of course it is.”
Stede hops off the couch. “You’re right! I do need to get back out there!” He begins to pace around the room. “Show pirate society what a menace the Gentleman Pirate has become, how finely I’ve honed my skills. Get everyone talking about the newest up and coming pirate captain hailing from Barbados.” He turns to Lucius grinning. “I’ve been going about this all wrong, I’ve been so focused on finding Ed, but I should have instead made it so he would want to find me!”
or; hoping that spreading his reputation will lead him back to Ed, Stede unwittingly attracts the attention of other pirates as well.

Summary
“Would be fake,” Ed explains. “Have met your kids in passing, and they’re kids, they won’t know the difference.” He tosses his clothing in the empty washer, adds detergent, queues the wash cycle, and shuts the door.
The idea of lying to his kids doesn't sit right with Stede. In fact it goes exactly against his aim of being a good parent.
“I’m not going to lie to my children!” Stede snaps, and then he immediately regrets it. Ed was just trying to be helpful.
Ed doesn’t seem offended by his tone at all and laughs, his eyes twinkling. “That’s just parenting, mate.”
Stede juts out his lower lip in a pout. “That can’t be right.” His eyes dart around the room before landing back on Ed. “Can it?”
or; desperate to prove to his kids that he is happy, Stede agrees to a fake relationship with his neighbour Ed, but real feelings always have a way of making things more complicated.
