Summary
One wrong step and the loud bang of the gun pressed against Mantas head becomes deafening. It drowns out her other senses. The world before her ceasing to exist; the only hint of it ever existing- of her ever existing- being the blaringly shrill ringing in her ears.
But it wasn't the wrong step, was it? It was purposeful. Confident, even.
A mostly hazy scene comes to her then. When Manta was younger, and Lati was kinder. When she'd come to the older drone in tears about nightmares plagued her, when Lati would make a dramatic show of rolling her eyes while pulling up a stool for her. Her feet couldn't touch the ground then; dangling freely while Lati quietly walked her through every part of her latest machine.
Lati doesn't move.

Summary
It takes Centi an odd 20 or so years to realize there is a difference between living somewhere, and being home.
It's not when she's first brought to the colony, Kadu dragging her by the arm and arguing with every guard that if they kicked Centi out they'd have to kick Kadu out too. Eventually they go from the sparsely populated hallways of the entrance to a dense crowd staring directly at her. She doesn't find home here, but instead a half remembered memory of being surrounded and pure fear.
Surprisingly, the first place she finds it is with the one who hates her the most.

Ines was embarrassed to admit she was slightly mesmerized by the sight. Her first look at Volk had been with a deep scowl, shortly after Ines had drug Isaz up from the ocean depths. With neither of them knowing how to swim, he had been deeply appreciative and instantly welcomed her to join their journey as she searched on her own. With no knowledge of the surface, she was in no position to refuse. Isaz had always been warm and kind to her, and while Volk wasn't mean she would be blind not to notice the way Volk avoided her like the plague.

Wild heard his name being called, hurried commands being thrown around in the background, but the fog was too tempting and it was too hard to pull away. He felt his mind slipping, his grip on the ice doing the same. Icy water climbed up his torso, along his neck, past his chin.
A cacophony of panicked shouts and one terrified, “Cub!!” later, and he felt the water and fog swallow him whole.

Summary
It was an unspoken rule within the group (or maybe it was just their collective instincts that agreed) that the older ones are to look after the younger, and while Legend isn’t older than Wild but by a year, the rule still stood, in the vet’s mind. Would they blame him for getting them both killed? Would they regret sending Legend out with Wild to go patrol before the Shift happened? Would they regret bringing Legend along to begin with, after he got one of their members crushed to death?
This was exactly why Legend never wanted to be a leader. He’s never handled having lives in his hands well.
