They were losing the war, miserably. Madara was more God than human at that point, and no new powers from the Sage of Six Paths himself could have saved Naruto, Sasuke and the rest of the Shinobi Alliance. So, they did the only thing they could think of - stop this shit from ever happening in the first place.
However, who did they chose to send back? You guessed it. Our very own fur-ball Kurama. But don't mistake, there is a catch, because not all of Kurama could go back, but this was their only choice, and they had to make it work.
Kurama was supposed to wake in a Genin Naruto, not this child, a 'toddler' for Sage's sake. He should have known, anything related to that stupid, unpredictable Uzumaki would never go as planned. That's alright, Kurama can still make this work, sure, absolutely, he is an immortal centuries-old chakra construct, with knowledge of how the war would go and well… end. He only had to stop it from happening.
Cool, cool, cool. That's easy, right? Well, turns out it is NOT.

He was abruptly awakened by being thrown around.

Because the world is like that to him, the shock didn’t allow him to blink.
“Great, you’re finally awake.”, Orochimaru brightly hissed. A child with a familiar silver spiky hair tiredly sighed beside the Snake Sannin. “Let’s now begin to plan how to save the world.”
