Summary
"Don't you want to enjoy the beach?"
Nagi shakes his head. "Not really."
"What do you do for fun, then?" Reo asks incredulously.
"Nothing much."
Maybe it's the light that beats against Reo's back that makes him look so regal and majestic in this moment. Maybe it's a tiny, hopeful speck of childish idealism that leads Nagi's breathing to quicken at Reo's words. Whatever it is, when Reo straightens up and says, "I'm going to make this a summer you'll never forget," Nagi's heart flutters and flutters and refuses to stop, and he finds himself believing it.

Sparkle doesn't want to end this night on a failure. She went through all the trouble of disguising herself as Aventurine, after all. If she can't interfere with his connection with the Astral Express, she'll just ruin his relationship with his coworker. It's perfect! Maybe whatever the IPC is scheming here will fall apart if she can cause some disorder between Veritas and Aventurine. Wouldn't that be so much more entertaining?
"Doctor," Sparkle says. She hopes her imitation of Aventurine's usual smirk is accurate. "Do you have a crush on me, or something?"

Summary
"I've never been on vacation before," Aventurine says. His voice has gone soft, and Veritas hates it, because both of them know that Veritas is a man susceptible to pity if nothing else. "Grant me my dying wish."
Veritas says, "Is that really what you want? A vacation?"
Aventurine laughs. He reaches up and presses a palm against Veritas's cheek. "I'm asking you to save me, Doctor," he says.

Summary
As they come face to face, Veritas's fingers twitch against Aventurine's; his voice is strained as he asks, "Are you trying to seduce me?"
Aventurine isn't easily startled, but Veritas's question is so simply preposterous that he can't help but chuckle. "You're joking," he says.
"You're holding my hands," Veritas points out.
"Well, you allowed me to hold them."
"I'm cold."
"So, I'm not trying to seduce you," Aventurine says, thoroughly amused. "I'm just keeping you warm."

Summary
Satoru's not a neck person. Satoru's not an anything person. Still, whenever Suguru drops down to sit next to him and Satoru gets such a wonderful, unobstructed view of his nape, it makes him want to touch it or kiss it or maybe even just blow on it, if only to see how Suguru would react.
Satoru also likes Suguru's hands and eyes. He likes Suguru's mouth, whether he's smiling or not. He likes Suguru's ears even if his earrings look dumb.
Maybe Satoru's just a Suguru person.
(Five things Satoru loves about Suguru, and one thing he hates.)

Summary
"You have to get out of here," Satoru says. "It's not safe."
Suguru finally lifts his head and, with his face a perilous few centimeters from Satoru's, says, "What are you talking about?"
His eyes are crinkled at the corners. He's got the barest echo of a smile on his face. His hair is longer now, but he sweeps it back behind his ears and it throws Satoru right back to last year. Suguru's wearing such an easy expression right now—there isn't a trace of whatever blankness swelled from his mouth the last time they met.
He doesn't remember.

Summary
Nagi goes quiet for a moment before he speaks again. "I hope you can be happy without me. Find someone else to spend your time with, okay?"
Reo has nothing to say. There's no someone else. There never will be, because Reo has never been one to waver. Even now, he's certain; Nagi is the first, last, and only person he'll ever love.
(Five times Reo and Nagi split up, and one time they resolve to make it last.)

"I scored a lot. You should reward me."
Their eyes meet. Nagi's hand is still on Reo's face, now resting gently on his cheek. "I don't know what you want," Reo says awkwardly. He draws back, and Nagi lets his arm fall away. "Is it food?"
"I can buy my own food," Nagi mumbles.
"You never had a problem with me buying you food before."
"Yeah, well..." Nagi hesitates. Reo stops walking, and Nagi stops too, fumbling for Reo's hand. "I have something else that I want now."

"You can't just write 'nothing' for an essay that asks about your dream for the future," Nagi's teacher says to him. "Your essay was one paragraph long. I can't accept that kind of work."
Nagi frowns, puzzled. "I just told the truth," he says. "I don't really have anything that I want to do."
"There has to be something," his teacher sighs. "Where do you think you'll be ten years from now?"
Ten years from now, Nagi thinks, I want to be with Reo.

Summary
The next time Chigiri sees Nagi, it's at lunch with Kunigami and Isagi, and he has a silver band on his ring finger. Chigiri can't stop himself from bursting out with, "You got married?" and everyone immediately whips around to stare at them.
"I didn't," Nagi says. He's sluggish to answer, eyes dull and half-lidded, and he barely turns to acknowledge Chigiri. It's not entirely uncharacteristic of him, but there's something strangely robotic about the way he leans away when Chigiri reaches for his shoulder.
"The ring finger is for couples, isn't it?" Chigiri asks. "People will think you're engaged, or something. Isn't it kind of weird?"
Nagi shifts uncomfortably in his seat. "I wouldn't mind," he whispers.
(Five times Nagi loved Reo from afar, and one time he didn't have to.)

Summary
"I'm Reo's friend." Kunigami looks to Reo for support—he's busy making heart eyes at Nagi, grinning like an idiot. "We're just working on a project together for school," he adds.
"Well, I'm Reo's best friend," Nagi says, all proud and boastful, a challenge in his eyes. Kunigami would take him more seriously if he didn't have the entire upper half of his body slouched over the table. "I'm his favorite. He likes me better."
Kunigami thinks back to his previous conversation with Reo about Nagi, checks off the mentioned adjectives—handsome, charming, funny—and duly concludes that Nagi is none of them.

Summary
It's like his old post-game routine, on chilly evenings after another satisfying victory, when he was too young to stay out after sunset. The popsicle melts slow on his tongue just like it always does, and for a moment, Rin closes his eyes and imagines he's at home again with a football between his feet, waiting at the intersection for Sae to pick him up, alone with the breeze and the sound of the city.
And then he turns to Isagi, and Isagi's already looking back at him, and everything stutters to a halt around them—and Rin thinks no, it's not quite the same.

Summary
"Would you keep playing football if it was for me?" Nagi says. His heart is racing. He presses the heel of his hand to his chest. "Not for the World Cup. Not to prove your parents wrong. Just—" his voice cracks, and he runs his tongue over the roof of his mouth before he gets the words out. "Just for me. To make me happy."
Reo is quiet for a while before he laughs. It's subdued, and his heart isn't quite in it, but it's better than how he was before and Nagi allows himself to celebrate that small victory. He hopes for one brief second, and then Reo speaks and his world falls apart.
"I can't, Nagi. I'm sorry."

Summary
Reo reaches for Nagi and stops himself halfway, and it's with his hand hovering awkwardly between them that he mumbles, "There's a rumor that if someone kisses you, they'll have good luck."
"I haven't heard that one before," Nagi says. The rumors are usually more along the lines of if you talk to him, you'll be alone for the rest of your life, but Reo clearly isn't concerned about that one.
Reo creeps a little closer. "I'm planning on asking the principal for permission to form a football team."
"Okay."
"I could...use some luck, you know."

Summary
"I think we can be nice to each other now," Nagi says. Reo keeps his gaze fixed on the wall. "We're good now, right? It's been long enough."
Long enough for what? For Nagi to stop being listless? For Reo to forget what it felt like to kiss Nagi between classes in high school? Some things will never change no matter how much time passes, and he wants to say so, but he makes the mistake of looking over and there's an odd glint in Nagi's eyes and all Reo can do is go limp and murmur, "If you really want to, Nagi."
He's weak to Nagi. That's something that won't change either, he supposes.
(Five times Nagi almost works his way back into Reo's life after their breakup, and one time he succeeds.)

Summary
The journey from Aaru Village to Gandharva Ville takes two days and ten hours.
It occurs to Cyno that this is not worth it. It's a waste in every sense of the word—the time, the effort, the fact that all he has to show for it are new injuries and pressed flowers in his back pocket—but every step he takes into the trees lifts him a little higher, lets his heart beat a little faster, and he comes to life amidst vibrant green.

"So," the man finally says, uneasy, with the vigilant caution of someone dismantling a bomb. "You want to marry Reo?"
Marry? Nagi never said anything of the sort, but now that he thinks about it, it's not too far off. "He's my partner for life," Nagi tells him.
"Your...husband?"
"Is that what they're calling it now?" Nagi says, nonchalant. "I guess so, then."

Summary
Hiori blinks up at him, then at the doors across from them, and he says, "Would you mind if I came along?"
"...Came along?"
"To France," Hiori says. He tips his head and Rin follows the movement out of the corner of his eye, vaguely intrigued. "Haven't got many friends in here, and France is one of the countries I was interested in, anyway."
Rin turns his cheek, just a little. "We aren't friends."
"We can get to know each other."
