"Darry, baby cryin'," Soda says, his own bottom lip trembling. Although he can't say his R's real well yet, so both Darry's name and the word crying sound like they're spelled with W's.
"I know, Soda," Darry says. "It's cause he's not supposa'be napping right now." He scowls. Vicky always does this, puts them down for a nap when she doesn't want to deal with them even if it's not nap time. Darry's old enough this go around that she couldn't really make him, but his little brothers she placed right into their beds and left them there to sleep, tired or not, almost as soon as their parents walked out the door.

Darry has to take care of his baby brothers when their horrible Soc babysitter refuses to. Problem is, he's only a kid himself.

"She's not wrong, baby," Jonathan says, still looking unsure but with teasing glint all the same. His knee bounces up and down like Steve's does whenever he's bored in class. Which is always.
"It's cute," Nancy states. "And not your fault. Anyway, PMS stands for premenstrual syndrome. It's a–"
"Menstrual!" Steve interjects, mouth agape. "I'm an omega, not a girl, Nance!"

It took him a long time to remember all the details of what Greyback said to him that night; for so long that memory had been petrified, preserved as only the facts of what came to be rather than the words and sounds and pain that led up to it. He's sure the innumerable transformations he's undergone since then are much more painful and drawn out that the bite could've been, but he was only five.
He thinks they all forget that, sometimes. Even he has to forget. He was merely a five-year-old little boy, barely older than a baby, whom the big monster sank his teeth into—and to that little boy, it was the most painful, frightening moment of his life.

Little Marica had just moved to town and, by the luck of whatever greater force there was in the universe, was plopped right into her second grade class. Even sat two seats ahead of Ace, which meant she saw the girl every time she lifted her head to look at the teacher.
