“Yeah, but—” Viktor’s expression turns stormy, and Jayce rushes to fix it. “They wanted to try me, like in court. I could have gone to jail. This is… it’s better. And besides,” he adds, knocking his shoulder lightly against Viktor’s. “If I hadn’t gotten expelled I wouldn’t have met you.”
“I don’t think that’s an even exchange,” he replies, huffing out a laugh.
“Just trying to stay positive,” Jayce says. “But you’re right, it’s not an even exchange.”
Viktor stares at him.
“Honestly, this is probably better. Why sit in a stuffy classroom all day when I can get rich and famous with you?” He winks exaggeratedly, and Viktor pokes him with his cane.
“You’re an idiot,” he says, but there’s no heat to his words.

Summary
“In a hurry?” the man asks, and Lockwood can’t possibly reply. After all, there’s a blade centimeters from his jugular.
“Easy, now,” the man continues. “You wouldn’t want my blade to slip. It’s very sharp.” Lockwood gulps and stares down the blade at his throat. It’s gold, or gold-plated at the least. Strange.
He opens his mouth to reply, but before he has the chance to say anything, Lucy emerges from the opposite bookshelf.
“Anthony,” she giggles, leaning against the edge of the shelf. Lockwood gapes. “What are you doing over there?” She sways a bit as she says it, and she’s got a lazy smile on her face. Lockwood notes that she’s mussed her hair a bit. She looks rather thoroughly drunk, which Lockwood knows for a fact she isn’t. Honestly, he hasn’t got the faintest clue what’s going on right now, but he’s hoping he can trust Lucy to get them out of this.–

Summary
Where is it? This isn’t like losing a regular notebook or a water bottle or anything else. These are his songs. His very much private and very much secret songs. There’s a reason that Mike takes his journal to school with him every day, even though he never writes music anywhere except for from the comfort of his room. It’s possibly the most incriminating thing he owns.
Because more than half of his songs are about another person. A very specific person. A person who isn’t his girlfriend. A person who’s Will. Which would be all fine and well (if not a bit strange) if not for the types of songs they are.
Mike is pretty sure it isn’t normal to write this many love songs about one person. Especially when it isn’t who he’s dating, and especially when that person is his best friend and a boy.
To be fair, Mike didn’t even realize that they were about Will until earlier this week. For months and months and months, they were just his songs. And then, a switch flipped on Tuesday, and what used to just be his songs became his songs about Will.

Summary
“Can I kiss you?” he asks. Hearing the words out loud makes everything feel that much more real, and Mike loves it. He thinks he might love Will, too, and the thought doesn’t feel new. It’s like a stone that’s half buried in the dirt but just got kicked loose. It’s something that’s been deep in Mike’s heart for a while, years, maybe, but just got unearthed.
Will pushes him away, and Mike has no idea what he did wrong. He was just telling the truth. Friends don’t lie. “What?” Will asks, voice sounding kind of choked. He’s grimacing, and Mike wants to un-say whatever bad thing he said so that Will smiles at him again.
“I— I asked if I could kiss you,” Mike says, and Will shushes him. He looks around frantically.
“Mike,” Will replies. He sounds tired. “You can’t just ask that.”
“Why not? I want to kiss you so I asked.”
“But you don’t, Mike. You don’t want to… to kiss me. You’re just drunk.”

Summary
“I love you,” Mike whispers, and Will just about stops breathing.
He looks more intensely at Mike, whose hair sort of looks like it’s glowing from the sunlight filtering through the car window. He’s perfect.
Will is sure that he’s dreaming. He must have died somewhere on the highway, and now he’s in heaven. This can’t be real.
“What?” he finally chokes out.“That’s what I never said to El.” Mike looks out the window, away from Will. “I never said ‘I love you.’ She says it to me in her letters, but I haven’t said it back in mine. I’ll tell her that I care about her or that she’s everything to me, but not that I love her, and that’s why we fought. I don’t even know why I didn’t say it. I love you. It’s not that hard to say. I can say it just fine now. I love you, I love you, I love you.” Mike’s voice breaks off.
