Parts that matter to you.” She watches Ed pause, watches the muscle in his jaw twitch and settle. “Because I’ve never believed that the two of you were only ever just partners.”
She smiles bitterly and ignores the tightness in her throat. “Never could prove that one, though, could you?”

Plus, she’d never met Maria Amaro. She’d never stood with her in a park and talked about unsigned divorce papers, she’d never bought her birthday and anniversary jewelry on her husband’s behalf, and she’d certainly never held her squirming, squalling newborn in the back of an ambulance. There was a line there, too, one of detachment and deniability, one she was grateful for.
