Summary
Stede Bonnet is used to certain things—certain comforts, certain understandings—at his age. He’s prepared for changes, of course, to his usual monotonous routine when he decides to become a pirate, commissions a ship, and forms his own crew. He doesn’t expect it all to stay exactly the same as before, naturally; that is rather the point of the entire endeavour.
Still, he doesn’t realise until he’s actually on the ship for a few days, trapped at sea with a wild and mostly unkempt mixture of men who really couldn’t be more different from him, that he’s forgotten something rather important over the years. Something that is hard to ignore in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by nothing but the same group of people every day in very, very close quarters.
