    Dick sags against the kitchen counter, spent and numb. He has no fight left in him. He’ll never be responsible for Tim and Jason being thrown in that system, separated and alone, starving, and… he flashes to what he's heard happens to boys alone in the system. That will never happen to Tim or Jason. He’s damn sure about that.

    And if Dick has to take a few hits to keep them safe, so be it. He can do that. Easily. Happily.

     

    Or, AU where Bruce Wayne isn't there when John & Mary plummet to their deaths. With no Bruce Wayne to take him in and the circus disbanded, Dick Grayson is thrown into the brutal reality of Gotham City's foster care system. Death follows him from the circus to the Drakes, and to Sheila Todd, where he accidentally starts a collecting little boys and tucking them under his wings.

    Dick Grayson is going to keep his brothers safe. He's going to make sure they all survive. And if he has to fend off drug addicts, gang members, and the weird Death Curse that seems to follow him, he'll do just that.

    “Dick,” the therapist said seriously. “Why are you here?”

    Dick floundered, searching for words that wouldn’t come. “I…” He thought of Catalina’s hands washing soap from his body, massaging his back, feeding him sweet strawberries one by one. “I… I had a girlfriend.”

    It doesn’t matter if Dick always feels Catalina's hand on the back of his neck, or her breath ghosting against his lips. He needs Nightwing. He needs to do good. How else will he counterbalance the sin weighing on his soul? So he’ll lie to his brothers, to Bruce, to Alfred. He’ll even lie to his reflection in the mirror. Because he knows that he'll be alright eventually. He'll be fine.

    He'll be totally okay.

    When Bruce Wayne dies, his eldest is left to pick up the pieces of an already disjointed family.
    He is thrust into a role he never wanted and has to put on a performance that might just break him.
    A performance that can only end if the original owner returned or when Dick ultimately gets forced into an early grave.

    Basically, this is a retelling of the whole era immediately after Bruce dies (rip), but if the focus was on the relationship's between the characters and with a few things adjusted to make the writing flow better. It's not a retelling. But it is a telling of Dick's headspace during that time, that I think is pretty accurate.

    Dick Grayson has many secrets. He's a vigilante, he's a Bat, secrets are just a part of his life. There's one secret though that he has had since before his parents died. A secret that he has never told anyone, not his friends, not his siblings, and not Bruce.

    Or, Dick's world has fallen apart again the weight of his secret growing with the years, the only question that remains is will it crush him or will it help him come home?

    (I really have no clue how to write a summary for this without giving everything away, so here we are :)
