The first time Henry sees it happen, he knows instantly that it is not the first time it has ever happened. They’re sitting in the living room of the brownstone, the two of them surrounded by their favorite people in the world, a night of board games long abandoned in favor of mocking the eighth season of Game of Thrones.
“God, don’t you have an off switch?” June groans, laughing as she chucks a piece of popcorn in Alex’s direction while he rambles passionately about the international legal implications of the Red Wedding. Nora cackles. “Whatever you do to thank Henry for putting up with you, it’s not nearly enough. Jesus, I can’t believe he put a ring on your loud mouth.”
Or: Alex is fine. Really, he’s fine — he just wants Henry to stay, even if Alex is too much. Henry just wants his husband back.

Honestly, sometimes having a kid is so fucking annoying. Like when your eight year old comes home from her tia’s and talks about the economics of a lemonade stand, for fuck’s sake, and puts together such a convincing pitch that even thinking about saying no makes him feel like a complete dick.
So now he’s using a nail gun he borrowed from his neighbour to help her make a little stand out of lumber. And somehow, he hopes anyway, not making it look like something she’s gonna get tetanus from or get crushed by.
She looks cute as hell in her little overalls, though.
Or, Alex’s kid has a lemonade stand, and Henry is their best customer.

Also, Pez is not American.
“I’m sorry. You’re not…Not Pez. Right. I’m sorry.”

“It was bloody awful.” The bottle of wine has long since disappeared, and Henry has dispatched Pez to the kitchen to make them something stronger. Cocktails are Pez’s specialty. Wallowing is Henry’s. “The most beautiful man I’ll ever meet, and I just watched him walk away.”
“Well, look on the bright side.” Pez presses a fresh glass into Henry’s hand before sinking down into the seat cushions next to him. “Children are wonderful. Beacons of delight, say exactly what they think, our future is in their hands, et cetera. But they’re also tiny germ factories. Chances are, she and her delectable father will be back to see you sooner rather than later, and then you can give him your number, arrange to see him in a decidedly non-professional setting, and get your leg over. Simple.”
Or, Henry became a paediatrician to help sick children—not to flirt with their adults.

The movie is over and it’s getting late, but all Alex can think of is that he really doesn’t want the night to end yet. Which is crazy. Twenty-four hours ago Alex was actively cursing this man’s name, and now he seemingly can’t get enough of spending time with him. It doesn’t make any sense, but somehow it does; it’s the same feeling that he was chasing all those years ago in Rio, the one that pushed him to go up and introduce himself at exactly the wrong time, the one that made the hurt of that encounter linger for so long in his psyche.
(A canon-divergent fic in which Alex spends another night at Kensington after the hospital visit and learns some very surprising things about Henry (and himself).)
