“Here?” Henry asks as he tosses Alex a dishcloth to mop up the coffee. “In our home?”
“In this house…all the way out here…alone.”
“I’m not a child, Alex,” Henry says, affronted. “I don’t require a babysitter.”
“I know that,” Alex says, “I know that. It’s just…you grew up in a palace. You had people everywhere. Now you’re just…alone out here.”
“I can assure you that when I was growing up, I was alone, plenty.”
Alex groans. “Oh god, please don’t say that. That makes me so sad.”

Henry’s laughing at him; beautiful and bold and wonderful in what is Alex’s favorite sound and smile. Happy. Free. But then, he turns to lead them out of the shop and bumps into a man.
Alex imagines the moment in slow motion for them — listens to the way Henry’s laughter dies in his throat; takes in the dual wide eyed stares, the quiet exhale, a soft, “Oh,” breathed into the universe in the most catastrophic turn of events—an exaltation of revelation.
Because, here, on a random Tuesday in September, just as Alex and Henry are about to head into their respective jobs, Henry’s meeting his soulmate.
