Summary
“You’ve really never?” Will asks, finally pulling a box of matches out of his pocket, not the lighter Mike had been expecting. He tips the box of Marlboros out towards Mike again, and this time, he takes one, trying to pretend like the subtle weight of it is not as foreign in his hand as it feels. “Not even once?”
“No,” Mike says, trying to figure out whether he should be getting defensive or not. “Why? Is it that hard to believe?”
“I just figured, you know, it’s easier to bum a smoke off of somebody than it is to get your hands on some booze,” Will says thoughtfully. He tucks the cigarettes back into his pocket and plants both hands on the stack of hay behind him, taking a careful step onto the bale already resting by their feet — and then, when it holds his weight, he hoists himself up, legs swinging. “And you’ve done that, so.”
Will sneaks out for a smoke break. Mike decides to join him.

Summary
Mike recalls the brief interaction he had this morning in the hallway for perhaps the hundredth time. Maybe his friends can help. Help with what exactly, Mike doesn’t know— but something has been bugging him and he needs to get to the bottom of it.
“Hey, do you guys know that kid that wears all black? Chain belt? Eyeliner?”
“The gay kid?” Dustin supplies.
Oh, that’s right. Mike knew he had heard about him somewhere. He’s kind of famous around school. Well, him and his boyfriend. Even with it being 2006, they’re still the only openly gay people at the school.
Mike nods. “Yeah, I guess. I ran into him this morning. Literally, like we collided.”
——
Mike has a run-in with Will Byers, the school’s so-called “gay kid”. He takes it upon himself to befriend him, and quickly learns about Will’s relationship troubles with his boyfriend Matt. Along the way, Mike struggles with his identity, and Will struggles with his self-worth.

Summary
"How could you use my own commitment issues against me like that?" The two keep dancing, Mike's hands resting on Will's waist and Will's arms placed over Mike's shoulders, staying close to keep up the act for his admirer.
"Maybe it's a sign you should actually work on them," Will chides. "You're gonna run out of people in the city if you keep going like this – I'm surprised you haven't propositioned me yet." Mike knows it's supposed to be a joke, but there's something in Will's voice that makes him think again.
When Mike doesn't respond, Will asks, "Why haven't you?" He wishes he could see the expression on Will's face right now. The question has always had a clear answer, but he doesn't know why it's making him pause now. He shakes himself out of it.
"I actually like having you in my life."
Mike realizes he's in love with Will. Will asks Mike to be the best man in his wedding. Chaos ensues.

Summary
When Will was younger, and far less jaded, loving Mike was something that felt like an integral part of him. Even when he thought it would never be requited, being hopelessly, irreversibly in love with Mike Wheeler was just a fact of life. It was a fact Will couldn’t deny if he tried, something he never bothered to lie to himself about, even when his chest ached with the knowledge of how deeply he loved his best friend.
Acceptance and honesty weren't luxuries he could afford anymore, because Will had learned that the ache of longing was nothing compared to the pain of having Mike… and then losing him.

Summary
"So," Will says, swallowing and forcing back the pettiness coating the inside of his throat, "There is a girl, then?"
Mike glances away sheepishly, blushing and raising a hand to rub nervously at the back of his neck. "Um. Not exactly."
Will frowns. What else could it possibly be, he wonders, what with the hickeys and the evasive behavior and the coming home late, all of which Will is totally normal and not annoyed about. Maybe it was - he winces at the thought - a hookup that ended poorly, or a series of unrelated incidents, or-
"What is it, then?" he asks, if only to distract himself from this obviously destructive train of thought, and Mike meets his eyes nervously.
"There's not a girl," Mike repeats, sounding a little pained, "But there is- a boy."
The world stops.
In which Mike has a boyfriend who is not Will, and Will is totally, super, very much okay with this turn of events.
