As she approached the dorms, a sudden twinge of fondness pulled at her chest. In the wake of her father’s death, Dimitri had likewise fussed over her, making sure she ate something. It was such a simple kindness, and yet the prince was the only one who had considered her needs.
And he had believed himself to be a monster? No, Byleth had never accepted that, not for a single moment.
Byleth hates Dimitri's constant self-deprecating thoughts. In trying to reassure him, she may have let slip something she wasn't intending to.

Unmoved, Greta continued her challenge. "Your behavior, Professor, is an embarrassment to the Officer's Academy, and your relationship with your students is wholly unacceptable! You have corrupted the charges Lady Rhea entrusted you with." She straightened her spine and pointed a damning finger at the teacher. "We will hear you defend your actions in a tournament!"
"So I have to defend Dimitri's honor? Like that story about Loog?” the professor asked.
“Yes, it’s exactly like that, Professor,” Lord Sylvain said, enjoying himself entirely too much. “You are the mighty King of Lions, and Dimitri is the fair young maiden whose reputation has been besmirched!”
Greta von Fenja is appalled by the new professor's lax attitude and inappropriate familiarity with her students. When that unqualified rube costs her the (probable) love of her life, Greta takes action. She issues the challenge of a tournament, but Byleth will challenge how she sees the world itself.

“I dunno, Teach,” he says, with that terrible, mischievous smirk that she’s come to recognize. “Never is a pretty bold claim. I’d like to see what happens with some real stakes.”
In hindsight, it was probably a mistake to challenge her students like that.

(The ships are very minor and only alluded to!)]
