Existen metáforas con prácticamente cada estación del año para vincularlas con "los nuevos comienzos" o "el principio de grandes historias"; el año nuevo en invierno, el renacer primaveral de todo aquello preservado en nieve durante meses... Para Childe y Zhongli, esta historia comienza a medio camino entre el verano y el otoño, en el mes de septiembre.
Childe, hijo de una familia de grandes empresarios, prodigio del piano forzoso y amante natural del jazz, convencido de escapar de cualquier modo del camino que se ha trazado para él, se muda a Liyue para estudiar un máster que no le gusta. Zhongli, estudiante de doctorado, vuelve a su ciudad natal después de casi una década para empezar a dar clases como ayudante en la Universidad y retomar una vida que había dejado en suspensión y a la que temía regresar.
O: de cómo Childe, un bajista inepto emocionalmente, conoce a Zhongli, monologuista geológico, a través de una banda de jazz y ambos descubren cosas sobre sí mismos en un proceso muy convulso y pesado (¿y se enamoran?).

They hold each other’s gaze for a moment longer, before Remus scoffs and looks away.
“That’s not the point, in any case. We’re here to help James.”

“And you touch me as if I’m going to leave at any given time,” Remus replies. The moment stretches for a beat longer, bottom lips bit down on and scowls that twist their faces into tragedy. To understand and not to, that heartbreaking violence. The distance between them seems insurmountable. “So where does that leave us?”
or, alternatively: Remus (a werewolf) works the night shift at a gas station and Sirius (a vampire) gets a flat tire not too far from sunrise.

“Couldn’t sleep,” James said with a grin, flashing straight, white teeth. “Decided to take a midnight stroll. You?”
“Could you stroll in any other part of the campus?” Regulus responded.
“Oh,” James murmured, smile faltering. “Well, I didn’t mean to intrude. I didn’t know you would be here, and I heard you playing and it was really, very good.”
“Wonderful,” he said, voice dry. “Now if you would be so kind and leave.”
“Can I listen?” James blurted. His nose scrunched after the words left his lips, and he reached up to scrub his fingers at the skin just beneath his eyes, behind the lenses of his round-rimmed glasses.
