Summary
Bucky Barnes is doing his best. He's getting by after the blip, after Sam became Captain America, after Steve...well, it's best he doesn't think about that. The point is, his life is different now, and he's trying his best. He just wishes the hollow feeling in his chest would go away.

Bucky gets blinded by a bright light as the tear seems to implode in on itself and there’s an odd little jolt as the pulling stops, and then Bucky’s blinking, trying to get his vision right again as he loosens his grip on America.
“You okay?” he checks, still squinting. He’s probably not blind, he thinks. It just feels like it right now.
“I’m okay,” America tells him and he sees her nod shakily as his vision starts to clear, and he carefully lets go of her, seeing that she can support herself, hands pressing onto the floor next to her.
“Uh…I don’t think I am,” says another voice, and Bucky turns his head so fast he might give himself whiplash. Because he knows that voice. He knows that voice better than any other voice on the planet and he’s missed that voice, so, so much.

The thing is, Bucky Barnes would have waited forever for Steve Rogers. He thinks he could have handled it. If only Steve had just compromised a little. But the thing is, he never did. And Bucky has to finally be strong, because they can't keep going like this. He can't. So he leaves. And now he's just left with memories.

Steve clenches his jaw and goes for the box, unfolding the top flaps to see what’s inside. And what’s inside is…well, it somehow feels like all the oxygen leaves the room as he sees what’s inside. Because it’s his things and clothes and trinkets and memories. Things he left at Bucky’s place. Things he gave Bucky. Things Bucky treasured. Shoved into a box haphazardly.
Steve swallows as he stares at the items in the box, because suddenly this all makes sense and it’s the kind of sense that makes Steve feel a little like he’s dying. “D-did he say anything else?” he asks, voice cracking. “Bucky?” he clarifies. “When he was here?”
“Yes, Captain,” Friday answers. “He said to say goodbye.”

In the third part of the Maybe series, our Steve went back in time to get the stones to reverse the snap. But he made a stop off to save Bucky in the 2012 timeline. This is what happened to the 2012 versions of Bucky and Steve after our Steve altered things.

“I, um, I was hoping to see Captain Rogers?” Bucky replies, cringing a little. He knows this is ridiculous. There’s pretty much no chance they’ll let him up, but he still felt the strange need to try.
“Do you have an appointment?” she asks, as expected.
“Um, no,” Bucky admits. “I just wanted to, um, thank him. He sort of saved my life last week.”
The receptionist gives him an insipid smile. “Captain Rogers saves a lot of people,” she replies, giving him an almost pitying look.

Steve is excited for his Christmas vacation with his friends. It's his first vacation in years and it's three whole weeks away at an amazing ski resort. Sure, he can't actually ski, but that's why Tony's hired them an instructor. An instructor who just happens to be absolutely gorgeous as well as kind. But there's no point having a crush, Steve reminds himself. They're only there for three weeks...

Steve had thought it looked beautiful in pictures, but they have nothing on the real thing. He takes a deep breath, filling his lungs with the icy air, waking him up after their long flight, and he looks up at the mountains. The very mountains they’ll be spending time on, learning to ski and probably making snowmen and having snowball fights on. Even in the dark, the snow sparkles. And the main resort cabin a few feet away is incredible too, like a picture perfect Christmas card, made of wood and stone, snow gathered perfectly on the rooftop and edges, twinkly lights wrapped around the exterior windows, lighting it up. It’s magical. It looks like it’s come straight out of a Christmas movie.

“I’m um—your mailman,” Bucky says, lamely. He mentally kicks himself. He’d—sort of—practiced this! I’m your old pal Bucky, good to see you again!
The corner of Steve’s mouth quirks up as he glances down at the envelope on top, absently, then back up at Bucky, eyes crinkling.
“I had a suspicion that might be the case, Bucky Barnes.”
Bucky lets out a surprised breath in a rush. “Oh! You—you remember me?”
Steve’s half-smile turns into a real one and he tilts his head at Bucky. “Of course I remember you Buck. Wasn’t sure you recognized me though—it’s been a long time.”
