“You must be Beatrice.”
Beatrice can’t hide the surprise on her face. She feels her eyebrows rise almost into her hairline, then realizes she probably resembles an oxygen starved fish, and forces her mouth shut and head to nod. She isn’t sure what it is about this woman that has rendered her momentarily speechless. Being lost for words isn’t typically what Beatrice is known for. She works in an environment that requires quick thinking and intelligence, but right now, simple cognitive processes evade her.
The woman smiles at her again, her teeth white and straight, and steps closer to hold out her hand.
“It’s really nice to finally meet you.” She says, eyes shining. “I’m Ava.”

The Ava that comes back looks almost exactly like the Ava who left.
She hasn’t aged noticeably but her hair is long again, there are bags under her eyes and she looks a bit more mature and muscular, though when she wakes up, her brown eyes still have a sparkle of mischief and her smile brightens the room.
The Halo is still in her back, between her shoulder blades, right where that one surgeon-nun put it all those months ago.
The only thing that’s noticeably different about Ava is that she doesn’t speak.
Ava, who has been running her mouth ever since she figured out how to use her vocal cords, hasn’t spoken a word since she got back.
The reason why is no mystery to them, though, because Beatrice’s memory is unmatched, and during their time in Switzerland she memorized every visible inch of Ava’s body. And that’s exactly why not even an hour after carrying Ava’s unconscious body inside she notices a thin, faded scar across Ava’s neck.
