Summary
Steve is struck by the posture.
Bucky sprawled on the couch, each and every time, curling into its soft embrace like a lazy cat, snuggling up to Steve whenever he could, rarely letting his feet even touch the ground. James’s spine is ramrod straight, a good few inches away from the back of the couch, and there’s tension thrumming in every line of his body, the sight so familiar that Steve would never have taken notice of it if not for Bucky.
It almost sends him to his knees, this concrete reality.
James looks up.
The eyes are the same, but the face they’re set in is older, harder, deep slashes carved into its handsome lines. Bucky looked like a boy who’d grow into a man with laugh lines, but when James’s brow furrows, it’s with a frown that threatens at every moment to morph into a scowl. He doesn’t look older than thirty, he never will, but he wears every one of his hundred years in his too-old eyes.
“James,” Steve chokes out.
It’s a greeting, but it’s also grief.
“Steve,” James returns evenly. “Good morning.”

Summary
Bucky really hopes Steve Grant isn’t Hydra.
He doesn’t seem the type, but then, neither did any of the others. The sweet old lady in the apartment neighboring his sure as fuck didn’t until she pulled a gun on him. And the jovial father of two who was Bucky’s handler for a couple of missions was harmless and helpful right until he wasn’t.
And Steve, with his all-American gleam and smiles that don’t quite reach his eyes, is a far likelier candidate than those two.
Bucky’s still bent over his desk with his shirt unbuttoned and pants loose at his ankles.
It’s been a long, long time, and it’s a brave new world.

Summary
There’s been a situation, Nat texts. It’s Steve.
Bucky doesn’t actually know what the situation is. She wouldn’t tell him over the phone—wouldn’t say anything except promise that Steve’s alive and safe. Bucky keeps thinking about how she almost said ‘uninjured’ but then swallowed it down.
He’s always had an active and morbid imagination. He remembers thinking the war made it worse, but boy, the war had nothing on the seventy years that followed. Worst-case scenarios flash through his mind. He lets it because shoving them down and thinking of Jesus never works. If nothing else, they’re a good distraction, and if the flash-parade of Steve injured and hurt and scared and broken disturbs him, at least he knows none of it’s real, unlike the dreams from which he wakes up screaming.
Still, nothing could have prepared him to walk into the compound and be faced with Steve fucking Rogers standing tall and unharmed but also three sizes bigger and distinctly green.
“What the fuck?”
