Summary
John leans his head against the back of the couch, the TV flickering in the background, forgotten in favour of watching Gale move around the kitchen. There’s always a quiet kind of magic in these moments, just watching Gale exist like this — completely unguarded, completely his — and he can’t imagine ever taking it for granted.

Summary
“There are ways around it.” John continues. Gale finds a candle and brings the fire to it, entranced by the wax beginning to melt and drip down.
“Like what?”
There’s a pause. “Have you ever heard of shotgunning?”
Gale drags his eyes away from the dripping wax and barely sees John pull the joint towards his lips. He can’t quite make out the features on his face, but he knows them well enough that he can imagine it perfectly.
“Vaguely.”

Summary
She’s back to putting the groceries away and getting everything out to start dinner by the time there’s a knock on the door. The outline of John is obvious through the lace over the door, shifting nervously on the porch and smoking. When she opens the door she’s surprised by a small bunch of flowers wrapped in newspaper in his hand, his duffel at his feet.
“Marjorie,” he smiles as he sees her, and she gets to watch him slip behind his grin like he hadn’t just been shuffling around in front of the house.
She just returns his smile and waves him inside, leading him straight through to the kitchen.
“These are for you.” He holds out the flowers once they’re inside and he’s set his bag down next to the dining table. “Just a little something to say sorry for dropping in unannounced.”
Marge takes them and smells them, fresh and bright and lovely. “Bringing another man’s wife flowers, what will the neighbors think?”
