Summary
Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a man who was chosen to be the leader of a scattered people. He carried a magical sword that looked like the inverse of all light. But, simply carrying the sword wasn't enough — he also had to prove his mettle through a series of Duels before he could be instated.
Out of a sense of duty, the man agreed to the Duels, and set out to find his destiny.
But was that really such a good idea?

The second Vanth’s hand meets Din’s beskar, wind erupts around them. An orb of light shines from Din’s chest. Vanth stares into it, transfixed, as if nothing else exists. As Din gazes up at him, Vanth’s features go slack, like he’s in a trance. Tentatively, Vanth pushes his hand into the light spilling out from Din — and when it comes back out, it’s followed by the darksaber. When he lifts that hand up in the air, the darksaber stands in a straight line above them, fully ignited.
The last thing Din hears before the world goes black is Vanth’s panicked, “Oh, what the fuck?”

“Tomorrow I need to make a run down to the outpost. Getting some supplies imported, it’s our usual song and dance. Take the day off,” Vanth said breezily, as he slung his waterskin onto a rack.
“Do you ever take any yourself?” Din questioned aloud.
That made Vanth laugh, throwing his head back. It wasn’t meant to be a joke. He showed all his teeth, grin blindingly earnest, eyes crinkling at the corners, his smile lines visible.
“No days off for me, amigo. Someone’s gotta watch over these people,” he clarified, and he threw a wave over his shoulder as he walked to his room.
But who watches over you? The question sat unspoken on Din’s tongue.

Summary
Tooth daggers are traditional for marriage proposals. Like most Tatooine customs, the idea probably comes across as a rather blunt statement to outsiders. There’s real thought and care and artistry put into them, though, for those who want to know.

Summary
Din was raised to regard change as the highest form of holiness, or the closest concept his culture had to it; life requires growth, therefore stagnation is antithetical to life. The man beside him, Din can’t help but think in the middle of the night, with sand so thick outside the windows that he can’t see the moons, has done more than just respond in sync when Din altered plans in the middle of a battle, when Din showed up at his door after months of radio silence and memories. He’s met Din’s dearest value without even knowing what it is.
