Monty’s choked out apology is replaced with an intense hiss of pain. He glances down, pads of disinfectant and gauze wiping over his skin. Stinging means it’s working, he knows. He just wishes it didn’t hurt so much.
He chances a look at Edwin. His face is tight, scrunched up with concerned anger. He’s no doubt replaying the events, trying to think of all the possible ways he could’ve stopped it; all the things he could’ve done differently.
But the fact of the matter is - Monty would rather endure an infinite lifetime of torture, than let his boys disappear.

Curt spins and flings his arms around Owen, pulling him close. Owen huffs out a laugh and pats Curt’s shoulder. When Curt can bear to pull back, he drinks in the sight of Owen in front of him for the first time in far too long; his hair’s grown out in the way it does when he goes too long between haircuts, and his jacket is dirtier, but his smile at the sight of Curt is the same.
“Curt,” Owen responds softly, cupping his face in one hand. Then his smile turns smug, in the way it does when he thinks he’s about to be hilarious. “Or should I be calling you Tadius?”
“No,” Curt snaps, so quickly he almost overlaps with Owen speaking. Owen drops his hand and laughs.-
Curt Mega, undercover in Bogs Hollow as Tadius, is bored out of his mind. Owen is generous enough to drop in when he finds the time.

But now he's thinking of the way Curt's face crumpled when he reached out and Owen jerked back like his touch was fire, and of another man's back turned to him as the world burst into endless pain, and of the hands fisted in his shirt right before they pushed him into the dreamt-dark of the ocean—and suddenly, Curt worried gaze looks a lot like the same pitying eyes they gave him when he first woke up in a medical unit, and he asked for his partner.
What a strange sensation it is, to feel so much like an explosive, all the time. His blood thrumming with its energy, always moments away from sparking into uncontrolled violence at the gentlest push. He's so tired of the way it fills his head with this crackling, impatient noise—the way the world seems to warp around him—the way his heart feels like it's slipping out through his ribs.
His voice is too sharp when he says, firm and unflinching: "I was."
