    Summary

They land in a field of flowers.

There is a version of the Herald who knows this place. Who has walked a thousand iterations of this field, in a thousand worlds and a thousand lifetimes. The same Herald who had carved that pattern into the blue crystal, knowing what it meant, knowing it would lead the keeper of his heart back to this place.

This Herald, the Herald of the right-here-and-now, knows only that he has found an unexpectedly soft landing.

    --

    Jayce, in the Crucible.
    Viktor, in the Garden.
And the Herald, in the worlds between.

Mel takes a deep breath. “I don’t think you understand how precarious his situation is right now. He is the most hated man in Piltover. Most do not want to see him recovered; they want to see him hanged.”

    Summary

The distant look in the Mage’s eyes snapped to the gap of the roof, to the near-silent tuttering of other, watchful machines down below. “No, it doesn’t matter. You will be safe up here. It should be simple enough, to lay protective wards into the earth of the tower. I won’t let anything happen to you,” he vowed.

Promises held no impetus in this world, where nothing happened, nothing changed.

The Machine reset its position on its knees and replaced its hands on the weapon of a fallen era. I can’t stop you from making useless promises, can I?

Somehow, without doing anything, the Machine had gained a visitor and protector.

When Viktor finally asks why Jayce stayed behind inside the Anomaly with him, Jayce stares at him as though he’s supremely disappointed by the question — as if Viktor has betrayed his own brilliance by asking something so irredeemably stupid. “How could I not? We’re partners.”

Partners, Jayce calls them. Not for the first time, Viktor wonders: Partners in what?

    *

Or: Jayce and Viktor survive the Hexcore, a blizzard, their own bodies, sharing a bed and all the things they’re too afraid to say. Slowly, they put themselves back together—piece by stubborn piece.

    Summary

    It began with the gifts.

Ratio was aware this was a tactic Aventurine employed with all his professional relationships. On his rare visits to Pier Point, Ratio had occasionally caught sight of Aventurine delivering wrapped packages from desk to desk. When they had begun to work together, he had received some expensive, trendy knick knacks himself that he had been all too happy to misplace.

From then on, he noticed Aventurine’s habit more often: the way he’d take the time to gather up those gifts on long shopping trips, as well as his preference for opening negotiations with a few lavish presents in a show of both goodwill and power.

And he noticed the way that his occasional, persistent gifts to Ratio increased in specificity.

Aventurine is clearly infatuated with him. Naturally, Ratio has a duty to nip this nonsense in the bud.

Unsurprisingly, Ratio has the hots for him. For the Doctor’s sake, Aventurine will have to shut him down.

Kaveh’s face is bright, young, flushed, freckled, happy. He’s wearing an Akademiya uniform and is as tall as the last time Alhaitham saw him (fifteen minutes ago) which means he’s an inch or two shorter than the last time Alhaitham saw him, because the uniform boots are heeled. He’s staring at Alhaitham with the aforementioned flush spreading like dye over the silk of his cheeks.

“Kaveh,” Alhaitham says. “Don’t freak out. I believe I’ve been displaced in time.”

With that, Ratio shut his mouth and turned his attention elsewhere, suddenly interested in the large window that overlooked a cubicle farm for the less fortunate IPC pawns. He didn’t say anything, but he didn’t have to. Aventurine watched his dark brows knit together in frustration, the muscle in his jaw ticking. Between that and the silence, the answer was clear.

Ratio needed a favor. Not only that, but Ratio needed a favor from him.

    Summary

Aventurine is having a pretty good day, all things considered. Sure, he’s on some planet in the middle of an abandoned star system, constantly stepping in what looks like fleshy, wriggling goop, and currently under attack by Voidrangers of the Antimatter Legion, but he has the incredibly good fortune of having the esteemed and venerable Doctor Veritas Ratio to accompany him.

The doctor’s here because it’s reading week, and he’d agreed to spend time with Aventurine instead of dealing with emails from students panicking over their upcoming midterms. He did look rather displeased when Aventurine surprised him over dinner with an IPC mission instead of a shared week off, but what was he expecting?

    ----

Aventurine and Ratio come up with a creative solution to retrieve an asset for the IPC.

Yes, Ratio remembers that first day: the Omega had introduced himself sweetly, words nearly a lilt. Aventurine. He had said his name was Aventurine, named after the precious stone, supposedly.

Now, months later with a dagger pressed to his throat, back against the floor and the window shattered, Ratio should have seen this coming, too.

Prince Ratio, as part of a trade negotiation with the IPC, is gifted a prize Omega who seems dead-set on seducing the crowned Prince. Ratio, not one for barbaric traditions such as treating Omega as chattel, resists any and all seduction attempts: Aventurine is not his mate, after all.

    Summary

He'd already known that there was a possibility the professor shared his feelings. He recognized that the way Ratio treated him was vastly different from the way he treated others, but the longer time went on, the more Aventurine was able to convince himself that he didn't have a chance. He didn't want to have a chance. Because-

Because everyone he had ever loved had died, without exception. He does not have the means to protect them. His luck never extends to protect anyone he loves, only himself. It steals from anyone who is willing to care about him, care for him, love him more than themselves. So it was far easier to ignore the loneliness at the idea of losing his feelings of love if he thought he didn't have a shot to begin with. He only took gambles that put his own life at risk.

It's always the ones that tell him to live that end up being the most hypocritical, after all.

Where Aventurine develops Hanahaki, gets the surgery, and falls in love, over and over and over.

“Well? Are you heading out there to study ancient runes again? Candace mentioned there’s been an influx of primal constructs near Aaru Village recently, so try to come back in one piece, will you?”

“Jumping to conclusions as always.” Alhaitham rolls his eyes. “You’re not entirely wrong, actually. Are you ready to go? I went ahead and made the necessary preparations.”

Kaveh’s brain short circuits. “What?” He asks.

“I just so happened to have a couple of vacation days saved up. Fontaine has an extensive literature catalog, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to take a trip.”

What. “I don’t— What are you talking about?”

    —————

Or, Kaveh and Alhaitham go to Fontaine.

“Ah, that.” Ratio nods, as if whatever the hell the pastry cat thing was…well, normal. It left Aventurine wondering if strange mutations running around were a common occurrence on the space station. The doctor gestures in the thing’s general direction. “That is one of Ruan Mei, member number 81 of the genius society’s creation. It’s simply a byproduct of one of her experiments and is harmless.”

The cat pastry's gelatinous body jiggles as it looks up at Aventurine, and blinks slowly. It warbles, and he has no idea what that sound was supposed to mean. “I’ll have someone pick it up in the meanwhile, and —“

”It can stay here.” Aventurine blurts before he can stop himself.

In which one of Ruan Mei’s cat pastries makes its way into Aventurine’s room, and he ends up caring for it with the help of a certain doctor.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” asked Ratio, voice low.

Aventurine laughed again. “Why does it matter?”

    “Gambler…”

Too soft. Too quiet. Too much like a secret on the verge of breaking. Not enough of a threat. The fear came clawing again, prodding at Aventurine, wondering, How to turn how to get away how to redirect?

    Redirect.

“Ahh.” Aventurine let a smile slide across his face, slow and serpentine. He raised his voice to shatter the silence. “I know what you want.”

Ratio shows up outside of Aventurine's rooms after finding out Aventurine survived Penacony.

    Summary

In his early days as a slave, Aventurine was subjected to neuro-reprogramming that, when activated, makes him mindlessly obedient. Thankfully, the program was scrapped, and it’s been over a decade since he’s even seen someone who knows the key phrase – but Aventurine’s luck runs out while he’s crashing Ratio’s vacation.

Naturally, Ratio is not content to let some bottom feeding slaver make off with one of his few friends. Offering further assistance, however, leads to unforeseen consequences - because as Ratio begins researching Aventurine’s condition and searching for a way to free him from it, their feelings for one another begin to change. But Ratio is all too aware of the ethical issues of being involved with a patient, especially one who has given him so much power over their mind . . . and as for Aventurine, Ratio is the one person he can't risk losing.

A complete non-answer. Aventurine truly is the most insufferable man Veritas has ever met. “If you will not trust me, why ask me to collaborate at all?”

    “I know you’ll do what’s needed, that’s all.”

There’s an undertone there, another layer to Aventurine’s forever-twisted words. Veritas has heard it before. He should know by now what it means, but it continues to dance out of reach, no matter how close he gets.

    ~~

Ratio is willing to play his part as collaborator to Aventurine's gamble. That doesn't make his task easy, however.

    Summary

Aventurine makes it out of the abyss - and into a different world. Things are different here - simpler. There are no Aeons, no intergalactic factions and corporations, no Paths and Blessings. He is not naïve enough to assume that there is no cruelty and discrimination here - for there always is - but for the most part, everything is peaceful.

Here, Aventurine's priorities are getting people's coffee orders right. Fairly straight forward, if you ask him.

Except for the bit where he is surrounded by too many familiar faces, and they remind him of a place he can no longer return to. That's okay. People come and go, and so will they.

Except for the bit where they come and go and come back.

AKA. Aventurine gets dropped into a coffee-shop AU with all the memories from before. He's handling things until he's not handling things. That's okay, because he still has friends (and Dr Ratio) in this world. He just doesn't know it yet.
