Summary
Evan Buckley was fourteen when he got his heart broken for the first time. He’d been in love with a girl from algebra, despite the fact that he’d never been any good at math. She sat one row in front of him, and when she leaned back in her chair, he could smell her strawberry shampoo.
She must have liked him too because by the end of September they were stealing shy, awkward kisses under the bleachers.
When he finally mustered the courage to ask her to Homecoming, he was convinced that it would be their moment.
Instead, she looked at him with a hesitant expression.
“Listen, Evan, you’re a lot of fun,” she said gently. “But I want something serious.”
“Me too,” he replied earnestly. He could already imagine it: her in a dress, his hand nervously placed on the small of her back, the music, the lights—
“I meant with someone else,” she interrupted. Her eyes softened, not unkind, and perhaps that was the worst part.

Buck has never been lucky in love. He has enough break-ups under his belt to prove it. -

Summary
“So, let me get this straight. You’re losing sleep over an animal who has outsmarted you—multiple times, by the sound of it—and now you’re pretending to like her so your boyfriend won’t notice?”
“Exactly,” he mourned. “And don’t you dare laugh. This is serious.”
“Eddie,” Hen articulated, not sounding the least bit compassionate, “you’re telling me you’ve survived a sniper’s bullet, participated in an underground fighting ring, and made it a habit to run into burning buildings every day for the past few years… and you’re losing to an ten-pound furball?”
“She’s not just a furball,” he grumbled. “She’s a devious mastermind. I’m convinced she’s going to kill me in my sleep.”

Summary
Buck nudged a charred bag of gummies with his foot and whistled low. “Man, this place is like a stoner’s cathedral.”
They moved in deeper, tracing the fire to a storage room. There, nestled in a corner, was the culprit—a wall-mounted electrical panel.
Buck steadied himself against the doorframe. “Do you feel that?”
Eddie glanced at him. “Feel what?”
“I’m not sure,” he said, squinting at the ceiling. “The lights look... brighter? And the room feels... kind of stretchy?”
He blinked. Now that he had mentioned it, something did seem off. He frowned at the scorched plaster, his mind struggling to rationalize the way it seemed to ripple. Skeptical, he turned to Buck. “Are you serious right now? This isn’t…wait…why are the walls moving?”
Buck stared at him for a long moment.
“Oh no,” he ultimately gasped.
Eddie’s brow furrowed. “Oh no what?”
Buck’s face was the epitome of seriousness. “I think we just got hotboxed.”

Summary
Before they can settle into their respective positions, Eddie steps forward, arms open. Maddie folds into him. It’s a moment of quiet connection, years of family and growth pouring into a single hug.
“Thank you,” he breathes into her hair. “For raising him to be the person he is today.”
She doesn’t know what to say, so she draws him in even closer, overwhelmed by the weight of his words, by witnessing her little brother commit to his person. She’s always been there for him, but in this moment, standing between him and Eddie, she feels just how much they’ve given to each other. How much they’ve fought for this love, for this life. It’s almost too big for this world.
They pull apart, their eyes meeting for a split second, and in them Maddie finds everything she needs— faith, adoration, and an unspoken understanding. Eddie’s look says it all: Trust me with him.
And Maddie’s heart swells, her reply silent but strong: I do.

For Maddie and Buck, it’s been a lifetime of shared strength and loyalty, all culminating in a wedding. This is their relationship, traced back to a pinky promise.

Summary
“Did you know if you put a frog in water and slowly bring it to boiling, it won’t hop out?” Chris is chattering as Buck makes a quick dinner while Eddie argues with his gas company on the phone. He can hear the occasional swear word in Spanish as his voice raises. Eddie doesn’t like to raise his voice around Christopher – the very thought makes Buck want to kiss him full on the mouth – so he decided to take it to the living room while Chris sits with his homework in the kitchen and Buck cooks.
“Hmm?” Buck asks, unable to fully pull himself out of Bobby’s baked mac and cheese recipe. It took him years, but he finally convinced the man to write it down. Bobby’s handwriting was juvenile at best on a good day, but this was nearly unreadable. Buck wonders if he did that on purpose. “Frogs?”
“Yeah!” Chris states. “My teacher said that if you put a frog in a pot, you have to make sure it’s not immediately boiling. You put them in water and then slowly raise the temperature and they won’t realize what’s happening. Then once they realize, they have no place to go. They can’t jump out.”
