He was alone.
Not literally, of course. There was almost always another person with Apollo. Most of the time, it was Meg. And that was fine. He liked her, mostly because she reminded him of Artemis.
But there was always an underlying separation between himself and others. Neither was he fully mortal, nor fully god at that moment. So maybe they could have understood. But they still saw him as such. They often ignored that he had lost that part of him, had it stolen from him. He couldn’t really blame them for it.
He still felt alone. And he didn’t think going back to god hood would fix it.

Summary
In the intervening months after Apollo returned to godhood, The Mechanisms landed in the universe. This is not necessarily normal, as most universal timelines tend to consider them as tragedies that happen to other universal timelines, and would never happen to them, a good upstanding universal timeline.
The Mechanisms were planning to spend a longer time on this planet in this universal timeline. Did they know that there were Real Gods in this universal timeline? Who’s to say? But what we do know that they did not, was that the newly chosen form of the recently re-ascended Apollo looked a troubling amount like one Jonny d’Ville.
