She rolled a rock across the frayed asphalt using the bottom of her shoe. It clicked and rattled, scraping like nails on a chalkboard. Cars passed by, too many cars for this time of night. In Hatchetfield, none of this would be happening. It felt like a lie, even in her own heart, but Grace stood firm against doubt in this, her final feeble defense against the tears she felt budding in her eyes. None of this would have happened if the gym hadn’t flooded. None of this would have happened if she’d been in her own town, with people who cared, with a church that would take her in unquestioningly. None of this would have happened if there had been a split-gender prom.

Why, it’s been so long since I’ve seen you in a dress,” he fawns, and Fig feels ants crawling on her skin, wringing her hands nervously. Her discomfort must show, because Gilears eyebrows get a little furrow between them, her heart rate picking up. Her palms are uncomfortably sweaty despite the cold hallway.

"That's just the hater in you speaking," Kristen beams, and she wraps an arm around Adaine's shoulders, all but dragging her away from a waving Jawbone and towards the fountain the Bad Kids always meet at. "Come on, you don't think you'll miss getting our asses kicked every week?"
"What, and also miss the weekly food fight you and Fig would start all the time?" Adaine snorts, and then her expression falls as she remembers that Fig isn't here anymore. "I mean… yeah, it's been fun, but I think I'm ready for it to be over."
