Summary
It started as thumbsucking. Akutagawa has done it since he was little—he thought it wasn't a big deal. He used to do it when trying to sleep, nothing more, nothing less. But the more that he relied on sucking his thumb to sleep, the more he craved that soothing feeling.
Occasionally—whenever stress was, well, stressful—he'd give in. Maybe in his office when no one was around, using his sleeve to cover his mouth and hand. Maybe at home when no one could see. Maybe whenever he could rest his hand on his face with sleeves covering his mouth. Perhaps it was whenever he could. To be fair, work was stressful; the mafia was never meant for weaklings. Dazai had made sure to drill that lesson into his head. So, as a result, it started to be a daily ritual. He confesses that maybe it's become his primary coping mechanism. It made him feel lighter, his brain fuzzy. Something about an act so simple that made him irrationally calm. So, when he found himself lying in a hotel room with Atsushi in the bed next to him, he needed to be irrationally calm.

Strawberries. Chocolate-covered strawberries lay inconspicuously on Atsushi's desk, the aroma deep and sweet. A small note relaying who it's from lays next to the small, white ceramic plate. The name reads "From Chuuya," with the mafioso's neat, sloppy handwriting lettering his name. Smaller text under the signature said: "PS, meet me in the park at 6 tonight." A small, soft message for him.
