In the months after Sauron's defeat, a village on the outskirts of Gondor prepares for the winter as best it can. Their crop yield was poor, trade remains disrupted, and they aren't hunters by profession. The world was saved, or so they were told; but heroism can't fill your stomach.
In the mountains nearby, some unlikely settlers find themselves in a position to offer charity.

The good citizens of Minas Tirith got to keep one Halfling as a permanent resident after the War of the Ring. They did not get to choose which one, precious.
Latest story: The messenger smelled of sweat. “I have been sent to convey to you a royal invitation. King Elessar is convening a small dinner gathering some days hence. As the final hand in the destruction of Isildur’s Bane, you would be most welcome as an honored guest.”
Aragorn had pulled this sort of stunt before. What was he playing at? He didn’t want Sméagol at his parties. No one did. Sméagol would do nothing at a party but take up a chair, be ugly, make nasty comments and stink. Aragorn kept inviting him knowing he would refuse. Expecting him to refuse. Wanting him to refuse. Making him refuse.
Sméagol showed his fangs in a lopsided grin. “An honored guesst, he says? Then we must go, mustn’t we? Tell the King we will be there, early, with bellses on if he likes.”

"Bargain, what bargain? We've never made a bargain with any Spider, no precious! No bargain!" Silly thing that he was, he thought She wanted the Precious, and that was why he was so frightened.
The Spider was unperturbed. "Mortal creature, thou hast asked thrice for leave to rest thyself in My chambers. Thou hast brought Me meat in return. I accept thy bargain, and it will hold. Thou mayest bring Me meat, and in exchange thou wilt have thy rest in My chambers in safety. No Orc nor Man shall trouble thee here. I do not desire thy flesh, for thine own flesh is sour and desiccated. But if thou dost not give unto Me with both hands, thy life will be forfeit and thy head I will dash upon the rocks."
Now it was clear that she did not want the Precious, but something older and bigger was going on than Gollum ought to be dealing with. He screamed again and it was some time before he left off screaming. The Spider did not seem to care.
