Beckett didn't miss the way her mom's expression shifted when Tendi tried to get out of attending her sister's wedding. It was subtle, just an extra wrinkle around the eyes and a small frown that appeared for a second. The captain smoothly played it off as a diplomatic opportunity for Starfleet but Beckett caught the flash of disappointment. She certainly didn't miss the peppiness in the older woman's step when the Orion finally caved; reluctantly agreeing for the sake of strengthening the relationships between her employer and home world.
That should've been Beckett's first clue that her mom was suffering from the dreaded sickness that affected mainly middle-aged human mothers:
